Big Changes in August & Maycie's Birthday Party

AUGUST comes to an end...

August 11th

We are proud to announce that Shaylin has been binky free since Aug 11th. Two days before her 3rd birthday she spit her binky out in the trash. We had been prepping her for several weeks leading up to her birthday by telling her that she wouldn't need it anymore when she turned three since she'd officially be a big girl. So she decided she was ready to get rid of it a few days early and voluntarily spit it out in the trash. She only used it at night so we knew she'd be fine with out it once she figured out that she didn't need it to fall asleep. We were worried that it was going to be a hard transition for her, but she did really well with it. We did have to lay down with her and scratch her back for a few nights, but she knew that Preschool was starting soon and she was old enough to not need one anymore. We were so proud of her and it was cute how excited she was to spit it out in the trash, not completely grasping what that meant. :0) Shaylin is mature for her age and has definitely made our lives easier with all the milestones she meets. We just love her so much! (Sorry the picture is a little dark, Jayna forgot the flash)

August 27th

Another much anticipated day was the day Emmalyn would be able to stop sucking her thumb. We didn't like Emmalyn sucking her thumb from day one (about 4 months old) and would try constantly to get her thumb out of her mouth, but we quickly realized that it was a losing battle. A friend in our ward recommended using the Thumbguard for Emmalyn and it had been a success with her 2 other kids. The Thumbguard is a little soft plastic device that wraps around the wrist and covers the thumb and after 3-4 weeks it is supposed to completely break the habit. We wanted to wait until after our California Trip and wanted her to be done sucking her thumb before she went into nursery at church (18 months old). Once again we were really nervous about this day and didn't know how Emmalyn would handle not being able to suck her thumb since she sucked it almost 24-7! Aug 27th was the very first day we put it on her.

Emmalyn didn't know what to think about it. It was pretty sad when we first put it on, because it looked like she had a little cast.

She is trying to figure it out and is biting on it. Luckily we had a busy day with watching friends and family, so I think it helped Emmalyn to stay distracted. She is sitting with Jessica (cousin) and Sydney (friend) in the swing.

August 29th

Shaylin's friend Maycie turned 4 years old and we got to go to her fun birthday party! It was at Maycie's aunts house in Gilbert. She had fun swimming, eating hotdogs and mac 'n cheese, making/decorating/eating yummy brownies, hitting a pinata, and eating snow cones! Maycie's mom Miranda did a great job and we had tons of fun.

Here is Maycie, the birthday girl and Shaylin...

Emmalyn and Jayna trying to keep cool and just got back from looking at the horses behind them...

The birthday had a brownie theme and was so much fun. Shaylin got to decorate her flower brownie and had so many candies to choose from. They had mini m&m's, nerds, crushed oreos, crushed mint oreos, skittles, frosting, they had everything. It was a cute idea/theme. Here's a picture of Shaylin's finished project and also had icecream to go with it too.

We had a lot of fun swimming in the pool...

Shaylin had a a good time hitting the pinata...

And before we headed home, we had some yummy snowcones to cool us off...

We got this last picture off of Tara Cunningham-Keator's (Miranda's friend) facebook account. She was a really good photographer who was walking around taking pictures of the kids. Since it's just a thumbnail copied down from facebook it's a little grainy, but you can still tell that Shaylin's face is quite funny in these pictures...She must have been letting all her aggression out.
